Engagement Photography on the Eastern Shore is one of my favorite things to do. Photography in general never feels like work to me, but more like an exciting adventure that I am about to undertake. And just like a hiker or mountain climber the better prepared I am the more fun I am having. For my clients this means a better experience of the engagement shoot and that in turn means better photographs. One of the most important things to have in your arsenal is knowing where the cool places are.Â
Where to Go for Engagement Photography on the Eastern Shore
Of course, redundancy is boring. When my clients ask me if I have any idea on where to take photos I am usually tempted to recommend one of our beautiful beaches. I mean, that is the reason we have millions of tourists show up every year. We all love those romantic photos of a couple strolling along the beach, seagulls flying out to the sea and the sun perfectly setting on the horizon. That for many is the essence of an engagement photo shoot on the Eastern Shore.Â
The Eastern Shore is More than Ocean and Sandy Beaches.
Part of the Eastern Shore's delight, in my opinion, is of course charming seaside towns and tourist attractions. I would love to photograph an engagement shoot on the Ocean City boardwalk on a cold and windy winter day. I think it would be amazing especially with wild and crazy clouds in the background.
However, we are lucky to have some beautiful state parks that are worth exploring. It is easy to overlook them for engagement photography since the beach seems to be always calling.Â
Engagement Photography on the Eastern Shore, Terrapin Nature Park
Terrapin Nature Park  is one of those places that seems to have everything one could want for the perfect engagement photoshoot.Â
This award-winning 276-acre nature park features a 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail, which meanders through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands, and sandy beaches. The trail provides a unique vantage point for viewing an incredible variety of waterfowl, wildlife, and plant species. A gazebo and wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, located along the beach afford a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and park benches located along the trail provides a brief respite for the weary. The trail, which wanders over several ridges, across marshlands and through woodlands, features two observation blinds overlooking the tidal ponds. The trail connects to the County’s Cross Island Trail system. Nearby free parking for the Cross Island Trail system is available at Old Love Point Park {from the website.}
Terrapin Nature Park, Easy AccessÂ
Besides the natural beauty, I love that the park is so easy to get to. Many of my clients live on the Western Shore of Maryland and especially if they are thinking of having engagement photos at the beach. Terrapin Nature Park is such a great solution. It is so easy to get to from both sides of Maryland and when you are standing on the beach and take photos with the dunes in the background it is almost impossible to tell that the photo is not taken on some Ocean Beach.Â
Of course, having the iconic Chesapeake Bay Beach in photos is something really special as well.
Abbott's Mill Nature Center
One of my recent favorite places for engagement photography on the Eastern Shore is Abbott's Mill Nature Center and Nature Preserve. Conveniently located between Harrington and Milford DE, it is an easy drive for anyone living on the upper Eastern Shore.Â
Abbott’s Mill Nature Center sits on a 376-acre piece of Milford Millponds Nature Preserve and features beautiful trails. Hike through lush deciduous and Atlantic White Cedar woodlands. You can also explore our handicap-accessible boardwalk that follows a clear coastal plain stream to open meadows, a picnic area, and a Garden for Wildlife idea garden. The historic working mill and its water source, a 20-acre pond, lend a sense of the rich human history of the area.Â
Pemberton Historical Park
is located in Salisbury, MD, and offers everything you need to have a successful and fun engagement shoot. The historic fences offer long leading lines and the historic building makes for a stunning backdrop.Â
Once a thriving plantation, Pemberton Hall was built on the Wicomico River near Salisbury in 1741 by Isaac Handy, one of the city's founders. It is an outstanding example of 18th century Eastern Shore regional architecture. The gambrel-roofed brick structure is the only original 18th-century house open to the public on the lower Eastern Shore.
The orchard next to the Hall features species that would have been planted in the late 1700s / early 1800s. The tree varieties are listed on plaques adjacent to the orchard. For more information about this historic park please follow this link:Â Pemberton Historical Park
Of course, there are many more great places here on the Eastern Shore for a great engagement session but I hope that these three different places and locations will give you a good start when considering the Eastern Shore for a place for your engagement shoot.
